A modest arrangement for guests who could hardly be expected to notice the cutlery.

THE EDITORIAL

First create the impression of an estate

A good table has an organising idea: old-world dining room, excessive seaside luncheon or candlelit romantic decadence. Start with one dominant material or colour. For our oxblood-and-antique-gold world, use ivory linen, a dark burgundy runner, brushed gold or tarnished silver touches and a few sculptural branches. The point is an atmosphere, not the contents of an entire homewares department.

The linen performs half the work

If possible choose a tablecloth that falls generously and reaches at least near lap level. Press it properly. Cloth napkins folded plainly have more authority than elaborately engineered napkin swans. A beautiful vintage sheet can work on a large table if its weave and finish are appropriate. Avoid fragile fabric under dishes likely to spill chilli oil or beetroot sauce.

Layer the place settings

Place the dinner plate or charger centrally, keep cutlery consistent with the courses you actually serve, and position glassware where people can reach it. An unnecessary fourth fork makes a guest anxious rather than impressed. A simple place card written in dark ink feels luxurious because somebody bothered to think about the guest.

Flowers and candlelight

Use one dramatic low centrepiece or several small vessels rather than a towering arrangement that blocks faces. Seasonal foliage and market flowers can outperform imported roses when selected thoughtfully. Check candle stability, ventilation and fabric clearances; never leave flames unattended. Rechargeable warm lamps can be a safe substitute in busy households.

How to shop without losing your head

Spend first on quality linens or reusable serving pieces, then economise on one-night details. Kmart and BIG W can provide bases; House, Myer, David Jones and antique dealers supply statement additions. Photograph a test arrangement in warm evening light before buying more. If it reads as 'hotel breakfast buffet', stop and remove something.

The final test

Sit in every chair. Check that guests can see one another, water is reachable, serving dishes have room and the main course can arrive safely. Extravagance only works if the evening functions. The person across the table should remember feeling welcome, even while contemplating the suspiciously expensive napkin ring.
