THE EDITORIAL

The brief

A beautiful home coffee service does not necessarily require a commercial machine. It requires fresh beans, appropriate grind, clean water, reasonable milk texture and an organised routine. A large machine with too many controls can make terrible coffee with impressive consistency. Spend on the part of the process you actually understand.

Three budgets, three attitudes

Entry: an excellent hand grinder, kettle and brewer can make delicious black coffee without occupying half the bench. Middle: a capable domestic espresso machine paired with a consistent burr grinder offers control and repeatability. Luxury: dual-boiler machines can improve workflow when entertaining, but demand more counter space, maintenance and attention. Compare total ownership cost, not just launch price.

The grinder matters

Grinding just before brewing is often a better upgrade than moving to a more expensive machine while keeping pre-ground coffee. A consistent burr grinder lets you control particle size and reduce unwanted variations. Match your grinder to espresso or filter as appropriate: some inexpensive grinders cannot reliably produce fine espresso grounds.

The service tray

Use preheated cups where suitable, water served separately, a little chocolate, clean spoons and milk alternatives clearly identified. If serving lactose-free milk, use a compatible formulation and manage cross-contact thoughtfully. A quiet and smooth routine impresses more than a dramatic ten-minute struggle with a steaming wand.

Care and running costs

Understand the manufacturer's cleaning regime, water-filter recommendations, replacement seals and service network in Australia. More complicated machines may incur higher maintenance. Compare warranties from authorised retailers and availability of consumables, then buy fresh roasted coffee from an Australian roaster and learn one recipe thoroughly.

Our verdict

Before spending A$1,000 or more, taste coffee made on the machines you are comparing, check whether your household uses milk drinks or black coffee, and account for grinder costs. The best royal coffee is the one you can make correctly when the doorbell rings. No ceremonial procession required.
